Crane operator extended vision system
Raise safety with 3B6 electronic control systems for cranes
2012-09-04Not using an electronic control system amounts to operating a crane blind, says Ben Windass, 3B6/Maintenance Manager for Compact Lifting Equipment.
“Fitting an electronic control system to a crane allows you to set safe operating limits for each task you are carrying out. Relying solely on the judgement of the operator can easily lead to safety being compromised by complacency or lack of knowledge,” he added.
Compact Lifting Equipment, based in Hull, Yorkshire, is the UK agent for 3B6 – the leading manufacturer and supplier of machine monitoring equipment.
Big range of load monitoring devices
We supply a comprehensive range of load monitoring devices and indicators, often collectively known as load moment systems (LMI systems), for mobile and pick and carry cranes, reach stackers, excavators, telescopic handlers, wheel loaders, forklift trucks and dump trucks.
An example is the Slim system. It is ideal for smaller vehicles such as mobile cranes, pick and carry cranes and telescopic handlers.
Ben said: “The Slim system has a simple four button display that is easy to use and quick to learn. It is a simple selector system for one, two or three falls of the winch cable. Unlike some other systems, it is also quick to reset, allowing the operator to move efficiently between different tasks.”
3B6 electronic control systems - robust and adaptable
The Slim system is one unit, so there is less to go wrong and can be placed on the machine where it cannot be easily damaged. It is also highly flexible and can be combined with a range of sensors to custom-build packages for a range of crane operating tasks.
It is a digital load monitoring system that allows a greater number of control signals through fewer wires and operates at a lower voltage, maximising reliability.
Ben said: “Fitting an electronic control system to your crane is very cost effective. Many responsible contractors now will only allow cranes on site if they are fitted with these load moment systems. So, if you don’t use them, you won’t get the work.
“Also, the costs of accidents caused by operator error can be very large. Repairing a crane that has tipped over because it has been overloaded can cost £5,000 or more. On top of that there may be prosecution costs, personal damage claims and loss of reputation that can put a business at major risk.”
Devices to measure and monitor
3B6 systems provide customers with the capability for load measurement, data logging and GPS tracking – also allowing wireless transmission of data where required.
